As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the world around us, the mission of Alabama Goodwill Industries (AGI) has never been more vital.

“Without a doubt, these past 18 months have affected us all – but for many people in our communities, it has continued to be downright devastating. We’ve been honored to be the helping hand they need,” said Alabama Goodwill CEO and President David Wells.

According to UCLA research, minority groups and individuals with less education faced the most job displacement over the past year and a half. AGI has continued to work remotely and in person to serve these individuals in Central Alabama. With the community’s support, AGI has hired more than 542 individuals since the start of the pandemic.

Wells added, “We exist to serve and empower people who have barriers to employment. Whether it’s due to lack of education, a disability, criminal past or other circumstance – we equip them with the skills, credentials and resources needed to reach their life goals through work. COVID-19 has revealed just how important our mission is.”

For individuals across Alabama like Russell, the Goodwill mission has been life changing amid COVID’s hardships. Seeking full-time employment in June of 2020, Russell completed a 12-week curriculum of job skills and digital literacy skills with the help of AGI’s Good Partner Coaches. Upon completion, he had the certifications, confidence and training for a full-time role.

Now, one year later – he’s celebrating his one-year anniversary as a Donation Processor at AGI’s Attended Donation Center in Pelham! To learn more about how your donated goods, purchases and financial gifts assist in job creation, self-sufficiency and empowerment, please click here.
