AbilityOne

ABILITYONE PROGRAM

Creating Opportunities Through Meaningful Work

Making the most of abilities and possibilities.

The AbilityOne program is a nationwide program funded by the federal government with the goal of employing individuals with disabilities. It is one of the largest sources of employment in the United States for individuals who are blind or have significant disabilities.

Through this program, nonprofit agencies provide products and services to the federal government, with 75% of the direct labor completed by individuals with disabilities.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

Helping Individuals Build Skills and Gain Experience

Alabama Goodwill’s AbilityOne program offers career development and employment services to people with significant disabilities who need specific support and accommodations to maintain meaningful employment.

AbilityOne participants benefit from valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience while earning a competitive wage. Federal contracts established with Alabama Goodwill provide hands-on work experience opportunities for AbilityOne participants in custodial and food service positions.

AbilityOne participants are paid according to the federal wage determination rate under the Service Contract Act. As of January 1, 2023, this wage starts at $16.20 an hour.

AbilityOne employees work both independently and in team settings while providing valuable services to federal government partners. All positions provide accommodations to help ensure employees gain meaningful employment skills. Depending on each participant’s goals, individuals may also work with a career specialist to support successful, long-term job placement in competitive positions throughout the community.
