What’s the “one-year rule?”

What’s the “one-year rule” and how can it help you start the year off right? It’s simple!

Take a look around your home, closet, kitchen, or garage…

Are there items you’ve not worn, used, or even thought about in the past year? Chances are your answer is “yes!”

The premise of the “one-year rule” is that if you’ve not used it in the past 365 days, it’s time to give new life and a new home to these items.

In addition to helping you start the year with clean spaces, there are actually some health benefits to this practice. According to the Mayo Clinic, decluttering can lead to better sleep routines, higher self-esteem, lower risk of asthma and allergies, and improved lifestyle and well-being!

To top all of these benefits off, when you donate to Alabama Goodwill, you’re impacting people (and our planet) in a positive way!

When you give, your donations are put to work immediately to provide direct employment opportunities, training programs, and more for your neighbors who are overcoming various barriers to employment. Something else to feel good about? Your donations help us divert millions of pounds of goods from landfills each year!

The end of the year is the perfect time to begin taking small steps to this easy, but highly impactful practice! All donations to Alabama Goodwill are tax-deductible to the highest extent of the law, so be sure to donate before January 1st to take advantage of 2021 deductions!

You can find more information about donation locations, items we accept and more here.
