Opportunities with Ability One

Alabama Goodwill Contracting Services is provided by the Ability One Program and Source America. These two organizations unite our team members to workforce positions and contract opportunities where they can become self-sufficient members of the community.

What is Ability One?

The Ability One program is dedicated to advocating for individuals who face barriers to employment, with a special emphasis on those who are blind or have other severe disabilities.

Their mission is to increase employment and training opportunities for these individuals. They use the federal government's purchasing power to buy products and services from participating nonprofit agencies (like Goodwill!) that train and employ workers with barriers.

Source America

Source America, a non-profit organization, was founded as a result of Ability One's advocacy. They are dedicated to creating employment opportunities and providing the necessary tools to succeed, including:

  • Employment resources: Assisting individuals with job searches, resume building, and professional skill assessments.

  • Training: Providing valuable training opportunities

  • Research: Addressing employment barriers and empowering individuals to pursue their career goals.

Alabama Goodwill Contracting Services

Our volunteer board of directors at the AGCS searches for and partners with federal organizations across the state of AL to create contract job opportunities. In 2023, we partnered with these organizations to create employment opportunities for our team members:

  • Sunlight Building Services

  • Bomac Exterminating Co., Inc.

  • WM – Waste Management

  • American Osment

  • Landscape Workshop

  • Alabama Goodwill Industries, Inc.

  • GSA – we have three federal contracts with them.

  • Social Security Administration - Warehousing

  • SourceAmerica – helps us bid on contracts, our liaison with AbilityOne Commission, etc.

  • Alabama Air National Guard – 117th Air Refueling Wing & Pilot Quarters (Birmingham)

Through the AbilityOne Program, people with disabilities and other barriers to employment can enjoy full participation in their community by transferring their learned skills into other public and private sector jobs.

As we continue to grow across the AL, we are excited to see how we can continue breaking barriers to employment for our Alabamaians
